I have always loved Fashion and will always do. I am the kind of girl who cares about what I throw on my back because I love me enough to dress well for me, we only live once and life is too short to dress shabbily. However, as much as I love fashion, I have never thought of being a Fashion Designer. I don’t know if this would change, but for now, it is what it is. Even though I have never thought of being a Fashion Designer, I have enjoyed working within the Fashion Industry doing different things and today, I want to share some Fashion jobs you can do to get paid with you. All of the ones mentioned below can be done on Freelance basis.
Fashion Journalism – Fashion Blogger / Fashion Vlogger / Fashion Writer
If you have always wanted to work in the fashion industry but do not have the skills to gain employment to work in a fashion job, you can create one for yourself by working as a Freelance Journalist. For example, if you launch a blog and write fashion blogs, you are working in fashion so to say. On your blog, you can focus on fashion related topics and become a thought leader in fashion journalism / fashion blogging.
If writing is not your thing but you love speaking and making videos, you can make fashion Vlogs and share some of your favourite things – fashion tips and trends with your audience or followers. With a good phone, you can make good quality videos and then upload same to your social media like Facebook and YouTube channel after editing the videos.
You can monetise your videos or blogs by Adsense and you can use your skills to help other people and get paid from doing what you love. PS: you may not get paid a lot with Adsense. I just wanted to mention that.
Starting out as a Fashion Blogger helps you to build an audience. The more you market your blog, the more audience you are likely to gain. As a Fashion Writer, you can help other fashion businesses or start ups create contents for their platforms and get paid for it. The more you write on your own blog, the more experience you have and this will help you master your crafts. Once you become a master at your crafts, you get paid more. You could earn up to $50.00 an hour up to thousands for writing fashion blogs for popular fashion brands. Don’t forget, the more time you spend developing your skills, the better you would be and then you can earn more.
In case you don’t know, I offer a Personal Shopping Service. You can follow the brand new page ShopLuxurybyMjObazuaye on Instagram. As a Personal Shopper, you help people shop for their personal needs.
Some skills that would help you include: knowing and understanding trends, knowing different brands – high street and high end and knowing where to shop – off and online. You can start a personal shopping service by opening an Instagram page and you can launch a blog to build an audience to whom you can continuously market your personal shopping business to.
Although you do not need a qualification to be a Personal Shopper, building on the 3 skills mentioned above will help you on your Personal Shopper journey. I would say though that it is always best to have some sort of accreditation as a Personal Shopper. To do this, you can get some diploma or certification to be a certified or qualified personal shopper. I got a certification at the London School of Fashion to certify myself as a Personal Stylist and Image Consultant and as you know already, I have a Masters in Fashion Buying.
Fashion Mystery Shopper
Many fashion brands with brick and mortar stores use Mystery Shoppers. If you do not have any experience in any of the above, you can research how to be a mystery shopper for any fashion brand of your choice and then get paid for it.
A Mystery Shopper is someone who shops in stores to see how enthusiastically and cautiously a Customer Service Advisor attends to them and their needs when they shop in a store. Mystery Shoppers are used for customer service quality control. They give feedbacks to the company’s Customer Service quality control team so they can ensure their customers always come back to shop in their stores. Mystery Shoppers get paid on “pay as you work basis” depending on the company.
Fashion Instagrammer / Influencer
Someone may be wondering what is the difference between a Fashion Blogger and Fashion Instagrammer or Fashion Influencer. Read on to learn more………In this social media age, especially on a platform like Instagram that is very picture focused, many people make a living from just posting on Instagram. Once they build a very large audience, brands and companies pay them to showcase or advertise their products to their audience and they get paid for it.
There is the Major Influencers – these are Instagrammers / Influencers with very large audience and mostly, they are the ones who starts a trend so to say. And there is the Micro Influencers, they are the Instagrammers / Influencers with a small but responsive following who can also make money from sharing brand products and services.
The more following you have on Instagram, the more money you are likely to earn. You must be very active on Instagram though to be able to achieve this. Some Instagrammers / Influencers claim they earn up to 5 figures monthly.
Anybody can do this, you just have to be “popular”, have a good phone or camera to take photos and be available to post on Instagram as many times as possible every week. You must also be able follow fashion trends, celebrity styles and fashion contents in general.
Pattern Makers / Sketchers
If you are very gifted in pattern making or sketching, you can also start your own freelance pattern making or sketching business. Pattern makers or sketchers make anything from €/$/£50.00 to €/$/£ 150.00 or more an hour depending on their experience. You can find other pattern makers on platforms like Upwork, Freelancer and Toptal etc to check out their profiles, work and testimonials.
And those are some fashion jobs you can do on Freelance basis to make extra bucks. You can do those jobs as side gigs to save money for a project or as a stay at home mum or dad to make extra money or as a college student who don’t want to be broke all the time or as a full time job. Why not? It is also possible to do more than one of this jobs together. Most importantly, keep working on your crafts, the more you work on yourself, the better you would be.
