It’s always a little shocking seeing a girl at prom dressed in a suit or pants instead of a dress, but why shouldn’t they? Tomboy-chic always lands up on the best-dressed lists. While it may take some confidence to pull off, there’s no doubt you can garner many compliments.
However, finding formal prom dresses that will fit and flatter a tomboy physique can be tricky. There are dazzling cocktail dresses, comfortable short prom dresses for girls, and long formal gowns.
Prom itself can be a pretty stressful exercise. There’s so much focus on the outfit. Even if you are considering a dress and you are a tomboy, a single dress on a single night really isn’t going to change your life. Picking a non-traditional prom dress, say, something vintage or even a two-piece pants suit, can be a great solution to your frustrations. Just remember that even if you land up in a gorgeous dress, prom isn’t the hugest moment of your entire life but it will be a special part of your memories.
Still not convinced you can have a non-traditional outfit or whether or not to even pick one before prom season? Take a look at these very good reasons to go for it.
1. Way More Options Available
Whether you are tall, petite, or plus-size, not relying on the racks that are especially put aside for prom dresses can open your options up a lot more. If you’re looking beyond what is usually classified as a prom dress, there will be a whole world of options available to you if you’re going for something rather different.
2. You’re Less Likely To Be Wearing the Same Dress as Someone Else
Showing up in a unique outfit, such as a feminine tux, can help avoid bad feelings all round and make you stand out in your unique way.
3. You’ll Be More Comfortable In Your Own Style
Whether comfortable to you means a simple dress or pumps instead of heels, it’s totally your style and should be all about what helps make you feel like you.
4. You Can Pick an Outfit That It’s Only Pretty, But Interesting
Whether you’re repurposing a vintage dress or having something custom made to suit your tomboy style, your outfit won’t just be pretty, but it could have a story to it.
5. You May Actually Wear the Outfit Again
Chances are you may end up wearing a non-traditional outfit again. Whether it’s something suited for formal events or a two-piece that you can wear as separate, your tomboy prom dress could end up being more versatile than some floor-length shiny gown with cut outs.
6. There’s Only One Prom
Chances are you’re only going to go to one prom in your life (okay, maybe two) so forget about what you think you’re supposed to wear and choose something you really want to wear. When you envisage yourself feeling confident and enjoying yourself, what do you see yourself wearing? Then go for something like that! Whether you’re worried it’s “not for prom” or think it’s completely outlandish, don’t even think about. You’ll probably prefer to look back at those prom photos and think “Why on earth did I wear that?!” than looking back thinking “Oh, great, I looked so silly at prom!”
Whatever you decide to wear for prom, it’s your style and comfort that counts the most.
