Slapping on a hat, throwing on some sun shades and wearing sunscreen(sun protection factor) may be 3 of the obvious things that comes to mind when we talk about spending time in the sun or on the beach. Well, It is way more than that.
Recently, I was in the sun doing marathon photo shoot because we had very good weather. We don’t get enough sunshine here in Ireland so when we do, I take advantage of it. While outside doing the photos, I discovered that I got really tired easily which is so unlike me because I am active with fitness and all. Well, my tiredness hasn’t got anything to do with being fit, it had a lot to do with dehydration because the moment I got home, I had a cool glass of water and I felt better. Although still tired, I decided to go to bed. When I woke up, I felt way better and drank more water.
Here are a few important things to know and to do when spending time in the sun.
1, BRING WATER
Water is very good for quenching thirst, replenishing and hydrating the body. On a very hot day, it is possible to be easily dehydrated so it is important to drink as much water as possible. While water is the healthiest and most affordable kind of drink to have while in the sun, if you are one who does not like to drink water, any kinds of drink at all will keep you hydrated. Bring in your cooler some drinks; if you like water, beer, fizzy drinks etc, just ensure to drink as much as you need to. Remember nothing compares to water!
Dehydration could cause you to faint while in the sun. Be sure to keep hydrated.
2. SUN PROTECTION FACTOR
It is being proven that one of the causes of cancer is direct exposure to sunlight. If you are going to spend time in the sun, whether for a short period or a long period, it is important to wear sun protection factor (SPF). A minimum of SPF 25 will be ideal.
I do hear a lot of people say people of colour do not need SPF, NO, this is not the case. If you are going to spend time in the sun, no matter what your skin colour is, wear SPF. It will protect your skin from any kinds of sun damage and potential cancer. It may not happen immediately but why risk it.
In the video below, I explained SPF with full details and why you MUST wear SPF daily. Please watch………..
3, SIT UNDER THE SHADE
As much as sitting directly under the sun is enjoyable. It is always best to sit under the shade if you are going to be outdoor all day. Well, to me, too much of everything is bad including the sun. Enjoy the sun, a perfect source of Vitamin D but in moderation so you do not end up with little things like headache.
4, WEAR A HAT
Another way to stay protected from direct sunlight is to wear a hat. There are different kinds of hat you can wear this days. Too many fancy ones if I am been honest. You have the straw hat, the woven sun hat, the fisherman’s hat etc, just choose one.
5, WEAR LIGHT CLOTHING OR SHORTS
Wearing light clothing in the sun will prevent other things like skin rash from too much heat and sweating. Think linen or cotton or any other light weight clothing will be perfect when spending time in the sun.
6, WEAR SUNSHADES
Sunshades will also protect your eyes / face from direct sunlight. It doesn’t have to be an expensive one. A cheap one will do the job too. Check my article on how to choose the sunglasses that suits your face if you don’t know what works for your face type.
HOW TO STAY SAFE ON THE BEACH
Unfortunately in life, accidents happen. However, we can and should always do our best to stay safe especially when we are by water. The pressure that comes with water can’t compare with the one that comes with wind. Anything can happen once you go inside the water.
Recently here in Ireland, a few teenagers have died from water accidents. Two of the accidents happened in the lake. The news say the boys got into trouble while under water.
If you are not a good swimmer or a learner swimmer, please stay safe when out swimming this summer. You can…
1, Stay in the company of adults who can swim very well
2, You can get help from live coaches if they are by the beach or pool
3, Stay by the edge / shores of the sea/pool
4, Watch from a distance until you perfect your swimming.
Always remember that it is always better to be safe than to be sorry and we only have one life to live. Be safe always. All the above tips for staying in the sun are perfect for days when you go to the beach as well.
