Whether subtle make up or dramatic one, good “foundation” is the back bone of any kind of make up. To get that flawless looking skin even if you don’t have one, you need a foundation.
However, it is not just enough to get a foundation, the KEY thing to consider when choosing a foundation is if the foundation actually matches your skin tone or would cover the multitude of sin of acne or spots we are trying to cover up……
More than ever before there are more beauty products available for our consumption. From foundations to Mascaras to eye lashes and anything you can think of really. All you have to do is pop in to your local beauty supply store and voila, you get what you want. You can also buy them online at a click. While buying has been made so easy, the availability of cash / money to keep buying products only to find out they don’t work is the problem / issue. To prevent you from wasting your coins (hard earned money), in this post, I bring you 4 IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU BUY A NEW FOUNDATION.
Step Number 1 ::: Full Coverage or Medium Coverage?
Full Coverage Foundation
Full coverage foundations are heavier than medium coverage foundations. Full coverage is best on normal to dry skin because they have some oil which helps moisturise the skin. They are also very good to cover up acne, spots, blemishes on the skin.
While it as simple as ABC to use full coverage foundation to cover up, the disadvantage is, if you wear it too often like everyday, it makes you break out.
They are best worn in the colder months (Autumn / Winter) because it is not as sunny. Sun makes your face oilier when you wear foundation.
Medium Coverage Foundation
They are not as heavy as the full coverage but are build-able. Build-able means you can apply more coats if you need more. Medium coverage foundations can be worn by all skin types. The best way to wear them is to wear a primer first and then apply your foundation.
They can be worn in all four seasons (spring, summer, Autumn & Winter)
So the first thing to consider when trying out a new foundation is what works for your skin type. Ask yourself,
1, Do I wear full coverage or medium coverage?
2, What does my skin need?
Choose your foundation when you consider the above.
Try these simple guidelines:
1, Normal to dry skin & to cover acne / blemish and spots, wear full coverage. Most full coverage foundations are not oil free. Having said that, you may find some that are oil free.
2, Combination to oily skin, wear OIL FREE medium coverage foundation.
3, I know I didn’t mention this in the sub- heading but also consider your skin tone……is it WARM or COOL. If warm, wear foundation for warm skin tone and if cool, wear foundation for cool skin tone. In the Mac range of foundations for example, NC is for COOL SKIN and NW is for WARM SKIN. If you are not sure, ask from your make up advisers, they are trained to help.

Step Number 2 ::: Expensive or Cheap
I am a strong believer that buying expensive or designer foundation does not mean you will get the best result or flawless finish…..this is one TIP I share anytime I do a make up tutorial.
To get a perfect / flawless / photo finish result, all you need is good application tools .a.k.a make up brushes. By the way, this Saturday, I have a new video coming up where I shared the most affordable but durable make up brushes, watch out for that.
Back to expensive or cheap. Your foundation does not have to be expensive, all you need is the right tool to apply your foundation whether cheap or expensive.
Having said that, sometimes with make up, you get what you pay for. This brings me to the next point…..
See HERE for WHY you should NEVER wear Milk of Magnesia as a primer
Step Number 3 ::: Get Some Sample First
For the sake of this post, I went to Boots to get some sample foundations. As you can see in the picture above, I got 2 different shades of the Boots No 7 to try out. Not really try out but to help me write this post and explain better. I will be trying them out all the same…
So as for you not to waste money or buy what doesn’t work, always get samples and try them out. After 2-3 wears of any kind of foundation, you can then decide if that particular foundation is for you. This TIP is very economical and very important.
By the way, if you ever buy any foundations that doesn’t match your skin, you can bring them back to the store of purchase. I do know a brand like MAC takes it back from you and replace it to what works. They dispose off any products you return. This brings me to my next point.
Step Number 4 ::: Never Buy Foundations Online
This step is another important one. Except you have tried or used the products before, I highly recommend never to buy your foundation online. Why?
1, It is NOT easy to tell if the shade you buy would work for you.
2, You can’t get samples when it comes to buying online
3, The hassle of sending it back is not worth it and of course you have to pay for postage when sending it back which means you spend more money. Some brands pay for postage BUT very rarely.
Like I said, except you have used it before and your skin hasn’t changed, never buy your foundation online.

And those are my guideline to consider when buying a new foundation. I hope you find the TIPS helpful. Foundation is essential to get that flawless looking make up. If the foundation is wrong, every other thing could look wrong. In fact, even if you do not wear any other make up, once your foundation is right, you should be alright 🙂 Do you have any TIPS to share, please share them below.
I want to thank you so much for stopping by today. Wishing you an amazing day.
And may you find your perfect foundation 🙂
