I get questions all the time about how I look “fine” in photos so I thought I’ll make a blog post on how to look your best you in photographs. This are some of the tips I learnt as a model. As a model, you get the chance to work with the best hands including photographers, make up artists etc. And if you have eye for details, you also get to learn from them.
TIP NUMBER ONE : SHOW OFF YOUR BEST FEATURE
This one works like magic. It is always better to show off your best feature/asset. We all have something we are most in love with in our bodies. This is the reason why someone like Kim Kardashian shows off her behind when she is been photographed. In my own case, one of my best features is my CHEEK BONE. You’ll notice that I always show off my cheek bone when I take photos. Mind you, not that other parts of our bodies are not perfect, we have been made beautifully by God. I love all parts of my body and I think you should too. See some photos of me showing off my cheek bone and I do it all the time. What is your own best feature/asset in your body? Let me know below.
TIP NUMBER TWO : FRESH FACED MAKE UP
When taking photos, it is always better to wear minimal fresh faced makeup. I do love bold red lips but for most of my blog posts, I try to stick with fresh faced make up with nude lips. You don’t have to. Follow this simple steps below to achieve a fresh faced make up
1, Frame your face with perfect brows. Make them as natural looking as possible. Don’t use jet black brow pencil/brow powder to fill in your brows, they won’t look natural. Try dark brown or black brown, never black.
2, Apply foundation to even out your skin. If possible, wear a foundation primer, it will help prepare your skin to receive the foundation. Ensure to wear foundation with low SPF, a maximum of SPF 15 will do.
3, Set your foundation with powder. Choose a powder without shimmer.
4, Apply blush. Blush gives the face a nice/radiant/healthy glow.
5, Line your lip with a lip pencil and apply your lipstick/lipsgloss. If lipgloss, wear it on the centre of your lip
6, Set your makeup with a mist setting spray.
7, If you can, contour your nose, flash photoghaphy can make your nose flat. It is always best to take photos without the flash on. Tell your photographer to take your photos with natural day light.
I demonstrated the below fresh faced make up routine on video here.
This is what my fresh faced makeup look like in photos .
TIP NUMBER THREE : FRAME YOUR EYES
You can use shimmery eye shadows or colour to open up your eyes. In the photo below, you will notice that I lined my waterline with a purple eyeliner that matches my jumper. What this does is that when light reflects on the jumper, it automatically reflects on my eyes and will look nice in photos. Mascara helps you frame your eyes perfectly. For someone like me, I depend on mascaras to lengthen my lashes as I don’t have much. I wear false lashes once in a while. See how I frame my eyes in photos.
TIP NUMBER FOUR: SMIZE
I love this one. Over the years, I have actually mastered the act of “smizing”. It simply means smiling with the eyes. You can achieve this by gently pouting and sucking in your cheekbone and finally don’t frown. I think I frown a lot. it is a bad habit I am trying to get rid off. See me smizing in photos below.
TIP NUMBER FIVE: SMILE/LAUGH
This one should be your best asset, smile. You look good when you smile and when you smile, the world smiles back at you. Laughing is even more fun and it keeps wrinkles away.
TIP NUMBER SIX: DON’T LOOK IN THE CAMERA
I know you’d question this one. You can look straight without looking in the camera. Focus on where the lens is situated on the camera and gently move your head to the side. Your face will still be captured without your eyes been focused on the camera. When you are been photographed for a long time, your eyes can become teary and when they do, they will look red: red eyes won’t look good in photos. If you eyes ever get red, sunshades will be a nice disguise and also it is a cool accessory. Clear vision eye drops does magic too. I try to place a drop each in both eyes when filming my youtube videos/been photographed for long.
TIP NUMBER SEVEN : DRINK WATER
Whenever you are going to be photographed, it is best to stay off drink that contains sodium carbonate. Any drink that contains sodium carbonate or fizzy drink in general will make your face look blotted. Water is best before taking photographs and of course all the time.
TIP NUMBER EIGHT : HAIR
If you ever feel like your hair is greasy before photos, try and do a quick wash with the dry shampoo, they are a live saver. I use them all the time. Greasy hair = bad greasy photos
TIP NUMBER NINE: BEAUTY BLOTTER
If you have combination to oily skin like me. Use beauty blotter to remove excess oil from your face before taking photos. Do not apply more powder without taking off excess oil from your face or your face will be more oily after a while and your pores will be clogged up. Beauty blotter removes excess oil from your skin without taking off your make up.
TIP NUMBER TEN; USE A PHOTOGRAPHER WHO LOVES PHOTOGRAPHY
Professionalism is key in photography. Just like any job, if your photographer loves taking photos, he/she will be patient and kind. He/she will direct you, guide you and ensure that you get good results in your shots. He will have your best interest at heart.
FINALLY, YOU CAN’T BUY THIS ONE
If you think you are not doing fine at your photo shot or are stressed. Just smile or laugh and the camera will capture you like you are really happy. Take a break if you need to. Always choose a day that is stress free for you to take your photos.
What are your secrets for taking photos? I would love to know them, share them with me below.
As always, thank you so much for stopping by my blog. I am always happy to see you here. Wishing you a month filled with love, joy and happiness.
