I have now come to a stage in life whereby the time I do the most is when the going gets tough. The old me would say something like, “this is too hard, I can’t be bothered” or “I can’t ‘kill’ myself” or “I just can’t do it” and on and on. These days, the time I put in my very best is when the going gets tough for me. WHY? This is because I have now realised that the end- result is where the treasure lies. If you like, call it light at the end of the tunnel. Today on motivation for Monday, I want to encourage you on what I call, “when the going gets tough”
When the going gets tough, a lot of us bail out. While this is the easiest thing to do, it is important to know that winners don’t quit and quitters don’t win.
See, a lot of times in life, before we break forth, we may have to go through some challenges. So many people who have experienced success / breakthrough has gone through one life challenge or the other. I have heard of women (men) who found breakthrough after leaving an unhealthy or abusive relationship; I have heard of men (women) who found success after being made redundant; and I have also heard of so many instances of people who “made it in life” because of the setback they experienced. If I may add here, although I am still on the journey of becoming who God has called me to be, I can say confidently that it was during the most challenging time of my life that I found my purpose. Think about this paragraph here!
Allow me take you to church a little. There was a man named Job in the bible, his faith was tried/tested, yet he remained calm, strong and hopeful, without losing his faith. Eventually, he “broke forth”. He found victory and his life remained his own in victory.
Today, I want to encourage you that no matter how tough is what you are going through, don’t give up. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Here are some things you can do when the going gets tough:
1. Step back to Reflect
You know the path is rough already. So, it may be a good idea to step back a little and not take more on board. If you can, exercise, go for a walk, speak to someone and rest. If you want to cry, do so, crying as an emotion that releases stress. All the mentioned may help clear your head and change your mood.
2. Journal
This is one of my greatest things to do. I write down things I am sure of, unsure of and the things I want to see. Some call this exercise brain dumping – the act of writing down everything that comes to your mind in a difficult time. This is also good for clearing your head and mind. Looking back at them brings clarity sometimes. It could also be a reminder of what you have achieved or what you want to achieve.
3. Re-Strategise
After you may have relaxed and done the bits above, it is time to re-strategise and ensure that you keep going. In this case, don’t take too much on board. Draw out a plan and do what you can and continue from where you stop each time. It helps not to put yourself under unnecessary pressure, this may bring stress.
4. Be Thankful
I have also learnt that in thanksgiving we receive more or find breakthrough. Complaining, whining and murmuring make things worse. When we are thankful; we are saying, we are ready for victory. This was what Job did (the “brother” I mentioned above). God honours thanksgiving. As we all know, the American thanksgiving is for giving thanks, not because our lives are perfect but because we are well and alive with friends and family we love. Even if you don’t have a friend or family, be thankful for the gift of life, still. It is showing you are ready for victory / break through.
5. Say Good Things to Yourself
Did you know when you see the best in you, other people see the best in you too? How we see ourselves is how we present ourselves to the world. I know, you are tired, weary and can’t be bothered BUT try. You don’t want to brush your hair or teeth, do it anyway. You don’t want to get up and dress up , do it anyway. You don’t want to show up at that occasion, go anyway. It makes a lot of difference in your mood. Ask yourself this question: how has feeling sorry for myself helped me? So, don’t lay in bed wallowing in self pity, instead say nice things to yourself. Affirm something good and mean it with the end picture of your “goal” in your mind. Encourage yourself. Psyche yourself. Declare something good to yourself. It helps, a lot in how you see yourself and motivates you to do more.
6. Don’t Give Up
No matter what happens, never ever give up. Giving up can mean, you are not trying, at all. Giving up can mean losing your faith. Giving up can also mean growing weary but trust me, if we do not give up, we will breakthrough. Don’t forget, the treasure lies at the end of the tunnel. Be patient, be prayerful, be hopeful and have the end result / goal in mind. You will break forth. Never, ever give up, my friend.

Thank you as always for writing from the heart and including your story. You inspire me always and you make me see good in everything, now. You are loved and appreciated. Thanks.
God bless you.
I have a question, what kind of journal can you recommend please? Hope to hear from you soon.
Thank you Chi for reading and for the feedback. I have actually reviewed a journal before here on the blog called the Super Working Mum journal. You can search the blog for that post. It is a good one.
You can also check on Amazon for different designs. Just be sure the back is solid, so it can last a long time.
Hope that helps. Thanks for your question.
I’m a day late, but I’ll take motivation like this any day of the week!
