If is possible for someone to look at me and tell me the things I want to hear even when I know they are not telling the truth. It is possible for me to allow anyone to lie to me because I just want a feel good factor or a pick me up. It is also possible for me to know the truth and keep waving it away because I can’t be true to myself, just for not being true to myself. I like to put it this way, anyone can lie to you BUT If you lie to yourself, you are your own greatest enemy…..
Today on motivation for Monday, I want to encourage you on what I call, “Be True to You”
In reality, nobody likes their ego to be bruised. “Nobody likes to be corrected” and nobody likes to be told off. Why? All of these things are a hard pill to swallow. It takes humility to take correction or to own our own mistakes and then look for a way to fix it. This reminded me of Steve Harvey about 3 years ago when he accidentally announced the wrong person as Miss World, in front of the whole world. The wrong Miss World was crowned, only for her to be de-crowned….
Harvey made a mess, he made a big mistake and as soon as he realised that, he immediately came back unto the stage and “redeemed” himself. As hard and as uncomfortable that was for him, he owned his mistake, apologised and did the right thing.
At this particular moment, hearts were broken, supporters of the wrongly crowned Miss World was pissed and upset, a lot of booing was going on, the right Miss World felt uncomfortable, Mr Harvey himself felt uncomfortable but the thing is, he was true – he did the right thing.
See, it is never wrong to do the right thing. It takes a lot to do it but it is NEVER wrong to do the right thing. In life, we all have aspirations, we all hope for somethings to make our lives better or propel our lives forward, we all hope to be someone or something but sometimes, the things we want don’t happen the way we want them or don’t happen when we want them. The question is, would we remain true to ourselves and give it one more try or try again or go after that dream again?
Some of the easiest things to do in life is to give up, blame others or shift blame. It takes a lot to own our mistakes or admit when we are wrong. It takes a lot but would we do it? Let’s check out some ways to be True to ourselves so we can be who we want to be….
1. Is it Your Fault? Admit it!
As I write, one of the first things that came to my mind was a time when I went to an interview. Sincerely, this is owning my truth now. I knew I didn’t prepare enough. I should have tried more competency based questions. I should have practiced and practiced more. I should have done more.
See, for a while, I didn’t admit it was my fault. I winged it and I knew it. I thought my charm and warmth could help but it didn’t. The questions were peculiar and because I didn’t do enough, I didn’t know them. I should have tried harder.
It took me a while to own my fault but when I did, I forgave myself and stopped pointing fingers and beating myself down. It gave me room to move on and do better. Then I stopped saying what will be will be. I owned my own mistake and never did I wing any interview again.
It is hard to own our own faults but when we do, we are being true and it gives us the chance to do better.
Have You Done All You Can?
Some of us go around saying things like: they don’t like us, they choose younger people, they are only choosing the people they know and on and on. The question you should be asking yourself is, Have you done all you can do? Yes, you are older than other candidates but did you give it your best shot? Did you try one more time to re-apply? Did you try to take that exam again? Did you try to apply for that loan again? Did you try to apologise again to that loved one again? Did you try to contact that person whom you think may help again? Did you pray that prayer again? The question is, have you given it you all, have you done all you can?
If there is more you think you can do to get what you want, then do it. Fight this fight till the very end. Try one more time, try again till you find your way. One more time I ask, have you done all you can?
You see, when we haven’t given it our all, we are not being true. It is when we fight the fight to get what we want, be it in prayers or by trying over and over again that we are being true. Will you be bold to do that process over and over again till you know you can’t do no more? I encourage you to try again, when you do, you are being true to you.
One Step at a Time
It is natural to want something and want it now. It is a natural process to feel like if I don’t get it now, that is the end. I encourage you to be true but not to push it. Give yourself the chance to take that one step at a time till you achieve your goal or to get what you want. Be patient. Be calm, the right time for you would come. What belongs to you would eventually come to you. Fight in prayers. Work hard but take one step at a time and be patient. If you can do this, I promise you that you are being true and good things come to those who wait in truth and patience.
Journal the Process
I know you are now true to yourself, you’ve owned your mistakes and are trying hard but you still can find your way or get what you want. One way that has worked for me and works for so many people is journalling.
What is Journaling?
It is simply writing down your thoughts and feelings to understand them more clearly. When you journal, it removes mental blocks and allows you to use all your brainpower to better understand yourself, others and mostly things around you. Journalling helps you clarify your thoughts and feelings.
The last time I wrote motivation for Monday, I talked about depression and I mentioned that one simple thing to do to tackle it or to help others is to SPEAK TO SOMEONE. When we do not get what we want on time, a lot of times, it may lead to being depressed or low in the spirit. See, if you struggle with stress, depression, or anxiety, keeping a journal can help you gain control of your emotions and improve your mental health.
If you are afraid of being judged if you speak your truth, journaling is a way to speak your truth in writing to yourself. It is a form of confession to self in writing. The good news is, you can journal anything – your prayers, your visions, your thoughts, your plans, dreams and goals, your challenges and more. Be true to you, be true to your journal. Eventually you find clarity and find your way….
When it comes to being true to yourself, it is all about owning your own mistakes without shifting blames, doing all you can to right the wrong, forgiving yourself and moving on. It is so hard to say, we didn’t give it our best but it is super easy to say, it is someone else’s fault. When we own our own mistakes, it gives us the room to get better. Ask yourself, is it my fault – own it and forgive yourself. Ask yourself, have I done enough, admit it and do more and finally, as you try to do your best, journal the process till you get the result you want for yourself. You will be glad you did.

I want to thank you so much for stopping by and for reading. I do hope you are inspired to be true to you and in all areas of life. It is hard but doable. It helps us to move on and be who we want to be…..
Do take care and be TRUE to you.
Much Love, Mojisola
