Someone once wrote, if it puts some pressure on your hair line / edges, it is not worth it. What this means is….. if their is any hair style you wear that could damage your edges, stay clear of it or them. In my honest and humble opinion, this is the wisest thing to do for your hair’s sake.
Its just hair you may say. I know but once the hair follicle on your edges or hair line is damaged, they never grow back. Did you know that?
Today, I bring you few TIPS on HOW to prevent damage to your edges
5 Ways to Prevent Your Edges From Damage
Personally I do not wear a lot of weaves. I wear more of braids, plaits and cornrows because they are so easy to manage for me / my lifestyle. Whether you wear braids or weaves, these simple TIPS will prevent you from loosing your edges. And if I told you I have never worn a wig, would you believe it? Unbelievable right! 🙂
Before I share those TIPS with you, as you all know I am transitioning to natural hair, I have some products I will be sharing with you soon, so stay tuned.
Now let’s get to the point………
TIP Number 1 ::: Stay Away From Super Tiny Braids (Million Braids)
The last time I went to Nigeria, I did those super tiny braids called Million Braids. Honestly, I didn’t know what came over me. I didn’t want to do it but somehow I ended up doing it. I got to the Salon and I just did 🙂 My hair in general suffered a little bit but the edges suffered the most. I have since grown my edges back, thank God.
So try not to do those tiny braids. a.k.a million braids. They damage your hair line and eventually hair follicle. Once the hair follicle is damaged, it is hard to grow any hair back on the hair line / edges. See my video of the million braids below and the prevention TIPS I shared………
TIP Number 2 :::: Never Use Glue on Your Hair Line
Using glue to lay your wigs flat look amazing and sleek. They actually look real like your own natural hair. While that is “flawsome”, using glue on your hair continuously would eventually damage your hair line / edges. It starts by falling off gradually then if care is not taken, you become bald on the hair line.
If you’ve ever seen Naomi Campbell’s edges, you would understand what I am talking about better. Her hair line is “resting in peace” (sorry I do not have photos for copyright reasons). I say to you again, stay away from hair glue.
TIP Number 3 ::: High Bun / Sleek Bun
If you’ve ever seen any of my videos where I did a high bun or donut or any up do in general, I do my best never to pull my hair too tight. Putting pressure on your high by pulling it too tight will weaken your edges and will eventually cause you to loose your edges.
So whether you are wearing your up do in your own natural hair or in braids, try not to pull too tight. I will highly recommend to sweep your hair backwards and in a low bun, that puts less pressure on your hair. See What I mean below……
For this hair style, I used the Eco Styler gel which I shared in this post HERE
TIP Number 4 ::: Keep Your Hair Well Moisturised
Moisture is very important to keep hair well hydrated and it also helps hair growth too. Ensure to keep your hair well moisturised especially in the winter. This will keep your hair from drying out and then falling off eventually. Just like your skin, always use products formulated for your hair type. For example, if you have dry hair, use products formulated for dry hair and so on…..

TIP Number 4 ::: “Wigging It”
Like I said above, I have never worn a wig. I hope someday, I would but for now, I am happy with my protective styling. In all honesty, wigs do not protect your edges, they protect the other parts of your head BUT your edges. The wig caps rest on your hair line which puts a lot of pressure on the edges and would cause damage over time.
However, the hairline is hard to grow back. You may notice that sometimes the hair on other parts of your head grows back but your hair line. This is because when hair starts falling off, it can permanently damage the hair follicle and once the hair follicle is gone, your hair line / edges may never grow back except you have some kind of hair surgery or you continue wearing wigs forever.
Don’t get me wrong, wearing wigs forever is not a bad idea because there are so many amazing styles and more but nothing compares to having hair on your head.
