One of the questions I get asked the most is who does my make up? Another is do you get a make up artist every time you do photos?
NO I do not use a make up artist and YES, I do my own make up by myself and every time too.
Are you a make up artist then? NO, I am not. Although for a long period of time, I worked with a reputable make up brand independently.
When it comes to make up application, just like anything, the more you practise, the better you get at it no matter what that thing is. Singers rehearse to get better. Motivational speakers speak into the mirror to get confident and runners keep running to get faster etc.
So, practise, practise practise………..
STEPS TO ACHIEVING FLAWLESS FOUNDATION APPLICATION !
1, TOOLS MATTERS
The tools you use in applying your make up will determine the result you get. You need make up brushes. They do not have to be the fancy ones. There are a lot of affordable but durable ones like the Real Technique brushes. I have them and I use them.
See here for a review of high end and affordable make up brushes.
2, KNOW WHAT WORKS FOR YOU
Buying expensive make up / foundation is fine. It is perfectly fine but your foundation does not have to be expensive for you to achieve flawless finish. Buy what you need and would use ; it is that simple.
My take on buying make up is this…not all expensive products are worth it and not all cheap products are bad.
Find what works by starting out with samples.
While it is okay to have so much make up, it is also not a bad idea to stick to what works 🙂
3, KNOW SIMPLE STEPS TO FOLLOW
a, ensure your skin is clean : wash, exfoliate if you need to and moisturise.
b, wear a primer : make up primers help your make up last longer.
c, Apply your foundation, let it settle and SET your foundation with powder. Setting your foundation helps give a flawless finish. It also let your face remain matte for longer especially if you have oily skin.
PRIMERS, WHAT ?
They are light weight and gel like “serum” you use on your skin before foundation or eye make up application. They are a nice base which creates a nice canvass for your make up. They help tame oil too for oily skin.
I wrote an article a while back where I talked about the side effects of using milk of magnesia as a primer. Please read if you haven’t done so already. Milk of Magnesia is not a primer. Please don’t join in the craze.
It is not about the price of the foundation now. Primers can prolong the life span of your foundation.
Currently, I use the Mary Kay Primer and I would highly recommend it.
4, CHOOSE PRODUCTS THAT ARE FORMULATED FOR YOUR SKIN
If you have combination to oily skin, use products formulated for combination to oil skin and same is applicable to all other skin types. When you use products formulated for your skin type, you get better results. Your skin feels like it should if your products are correct/right for your skin.
For example, I have a combination skin so I use products formulated for people with combination skin ; both foundation and powder.
5, DIFFERENT SEASONS
In the winter, your skin may be a little drier than normal. I highly recommend more moisture than normal at this time. Also if you can afford to, get a make up with dewy finish. They make your skin shine/glow which is perfect for winter.
In the summer you do not need so much make up because there is sunshine which makes your skin glow naturally.
6, ADDED BONUS : SETTING SPRAYS
For that dewy glow after applying your foundation and powder, use a setting spray. It hydrates the skin and gives the glow of life.
I get asked all the time how I get my skin to glow like that? Thanks to my setting spray. It removes that powdery feel from your face and replaces it with impeccable glow.
To achieve that glow, I use the FIX PLUS by MAC. For a budget friendly one, I highly recommend the NYX setting spray.
Setting Sprays are mist like liquid. Ideally you spray them into the air and receive it with your face.
Those are my simple TIPS for achieving flawless make up look. You do not need to be a make up artist to achieve flawless make up. Like I said, practise, practise and practise even more.
Finally, I always recommend that you take care of your skin all the time. When you have a “clean and clear” skin, your make up will look flawless no matter how cheap your make up/foundation is. I use the 3 step system for my own personal skin care. See the full review here
So tell me, how do you apply your own make up? Did you find these TIPS helpful? Would love to hear from you please.

Thank you dear Stella. You are always so sweet.
Cheers.
Your skin always looks flawless and your make up game is always on point!
I agree with you, we don’t have to have the most expensive tools or products to achieve a flawless foundation application. I personally have a mix of high and low products and find they work beautifully together. Primers are amazing too but I can only use them sparingly as I have very sensitive skin.
Thanks for sharing!

Dear Stella, so good to read from you. Yes, the primer is great base for your make up.
Thanks for reading.
Mojisola.
I’m not great with make-up hence I’m always in sunglasses. It makes getting up in the morning and doing a photo shoot that much easier. One less step for me to do. It also ensures I’ll be on time when meeting my photographer. However your make-up always looks great. We could all take a lesson from you.
