Why Look For That Extra Special Ring?
It is the most ornate of the three rings in a bridal set. The engagement ring encapsulates all the love and optimism of you both. It should have exuberance and flair. It should say something about you as a couple. And most of all, it needs to be special for her, because it is her hand it will grace. It can’t be just any old ring, or a style you’re likely to see someone else wearing often. Here are some things you should think about as you look for the perfect ring to present her as you ask that momentous question, “Will you marry me?”
Have A Budget In Mind
Based on what others do, the engagement ring was supposed to cost two months of your salary. This was a hangover from the days when it was seen as part of the bride price, and also a slick marketing strategy by the diamond house De Beers. Do be prepared to pay for quality, but don’t think you have to pay through the nose. Jewellers and diamond merchants who buy in large quantities can sell at lower prices than smaller operators. It is possible, say, to purchase cheap engagement rings in Toronto or in your local area if you find the stores that deal wholesale.
Have A Precious Metal In Mind
Gold is traditional, but there are yellow, white, and rose gold to choose from. These different varieties of gold can be combined to make two or three tone rings. Consider also the white metals Platinum and Palladium. True, they’re dearer than gold, but they have a different quality – they develop a patina over time which sets diamonds off all the more. Also, consider the band width. Rings can be from one to twenty millimetres wide, but most fiancées opt for something between two and six millimetres.
Consider What Gemstones Will Work For Her
Nature has given us a gorgeous palette of gems for jewellers to play with to create beautiful jewels. The overwhelming majority of couples choose diamonds for their engagement rings. Rubies, emeralds, and sapphires are seen as central stones in some rings, but they are virtually always supported by that most dazzling of gems – the diamond.
Know The Four Cs
Diamond merchants have a set of criteria: carat, colour, clarity, and cut. The carat is the weight of the stone; a single carat diamond is seen by many as the benchmark for an engagement ring, although a diamond of slightly less than one carat will be a lot more affordable. A diamond’s colour ranges from white to yellow, and then there are blue diamonds, and pink diamonds. Some of the more coloured stones can look dull on the finger, particularly deeper yellow diamonds. Clarity affects the diamond’s light refracting properties and is the result of the number of flaws in the stone. All stones have some flaws, but the fewer there are, the greater the diamond’s brilliance is. Finally, the cut of the diamond is how it is shaped and faceted to give it a style and allow it to capture the maximum light to the best effect. There are ten currently fashionable cuts you should consider for the ring of her dreams, some seen worn prominently by celebrities around the world.
Consider these points and make her dreams come true.

I gave Paul options for styles and the like before he went out to get my engagement ring – and he did very well picking it out!
