Just like the skin, the scalp produces natural oils that help the hair stay oily. People with extremely oily skin would understand how annoying it can be for the face to look oily again after a few hours of washing the face.
While packing on oil on the hair is one major factor that can make the hair greasy, other factors like hormones and medicines like birth control could cause the hair to be oily.
How to Prevent Greasy Hair
Shampoo Less
The first thing that would come to mind is to wash your hair loads because it is greasy already. While that may seem like the easiest and wisest thing to do, it is not the best thing to do.
It is important NOT to wash your hair daily if you have greasy hair. Instead wash you hair a minimum of 2 times a week and maximum of 3 times a week. Why you may ask?
When you wash your hair every day, your shampoo will strip your hair of all its natural oils and nutrients which will cause your scalp to produce more oil and in return your hair will be more greasy. The hair wash break you take helps your hair to balance out in oil production which help reduces greasy hair. Nobody likes greasy hair. Not only does it make you look unkept, it looks bad in photos.
It is also very important to rinse off shampoo thoroughly from the hair when you shampoo your hair.
What Shampoo should I be Using then?
A long time ago when I first moved to Ireland, I had hair trouble. Why? Back at home, I didn’t have to worry about making my own hair or taking out my braids. All I needed to do was to go to the hair saloon and every thing was taken care of. It isn’t the same around here because hair saloon that caters for black hair is not readily available. For me to solve my hair problem, I had to do a lot of hair study and my hair is been good.
However, on the day I visited my local hair saloon, the lady there was curious and wanted to know about black people’s hair. She gave me some TIPS on the day during our chat and I will share them with you.
She said always use shampoos that are gentle. Aggressive shampoos cause hair follicle to be irritated which then cause hair to produce more oil. More oil on the hair means greasy hair. She also said look for these 3 ingredients in shampoos…..
1, Salicylic acid helps reduce oil from the scalp
2, Ketoconazole
3, selenium sulphide
If your shampoos contains ingredients number 2 and number 3, it is good for reducing greasy hair.
Another thing I have read is to use more than one shampoo. This particular method I have tried myself and I shared the products I currently use to take care of my own natural hair in the video below…………
Hair Conditioners
The reason why you condition your hair is to lock in moisture unto the hair. If hair is greasy already, there is really no need to add in more conditioner to it. if you have to condition the hair, condition once in a while or condition just the TIPS of hair to avoid breakage.
I always ensure to condition the tips or ends of my hair to avoid breakage and deep condition when I need to as I do not wash my hair excessively.
Hair Moisturisers
I do know that just like the body, the hair also needs moisture. If you have greasy hair, avoid hair products formulated with oils and silicone. Not that oil in hair is not good, it is but products that are oil based are not the best for already greasy hair. Too much oil in hair makes hair heavy and greasy.
For people who wear weaves, you will notice that after applying so much hair products on your hair for a while, your hair becomes heavy and greasy and once you wash it becomes light and bouncy.
If you have to use moisture on your hair, use hair mayonnaise instead. Also use products whose main ingredients is water. Water based products are the best because they hydrate your hair.
Extensions, Weaves & Braids
For people who wear braids, weave or any kinds of hair extensions, we all know it is impossible to wash your hair every second day except it is the U-part weaves and clip ins; the ones you can clip in whenever you want. The dry shampoo has to be your best friend to avoid greasy or excessively oily hair.
There are different types of dry shampoos, the liquid and the powder dry shampoos. While both of them are good, it has been proven that the powdery dry shampoos are the best for days when you can’t wash your hair. Use once a day.
If you are one who prefers the liquid dry shampoo, in my hand in the picture below, I have the liquid dry shampoo. I have used it before and it worked for my extensions.
I applied, massaged in, towel and blow dry. The idea is to ensure that hair is not wet to prevent smell.
Hair Wash after Exercise
I do exercise and I do wear weaves. Both are bad combinations but I have figured out how not to make my hair smell. I wear scarves during work out and once I finish, I remove scarf as normal. And because hair is wet already after exercise or work out, you can simple get a hair spray bottle, wet hair more, towel and then blow dry. You can thoroughly wash hair then on hair wash day.
On some exercise days, I sweat more that the other. The above method is what I do and it has worked so far. And by the way, in my last post, I wrote I do not bare the mid riff, well, I do in reality but only when I get warm during exercise and on days when I do serious abdominals 🙂
For Braided Hair
I wear braids because they are easy to manage and maintain. To keep your braids healthy and non greasy, products with salicylic acid are perfect for hydrating and they help keep dandruff away. The one in the picture below is what I use and I keep buying over and over again.
For keeping away things like dandruff and itch scalp, I use surgical spirit to clean roots of hair and spray with the hair spray below.
Alternative Remedy For Preventing Greasy Hair
Apple Cider Vinegar
Vinegar is well known as very good for a lot of things. The apple cider vinegar is helps balance the PH level of your scalp. To use this simple method, mix a spoon or two spoons of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water. After hair wash, pour this apple cider vinegar mix into your hair, leave in for about 3-5minutes and then dry. You can repeat up to twice weekly.
Baking Soda Mix
The baking soda is also very good for reducing grease in hair. Get a one part baking soda and mix the powder in three part water to create a paste. After wash, apply the mixture to hair like you would apply your hair conditioner, leave in for 5 minutes and wash with warm water. You can repeat twice a week.
Home Made Aleo Vera Shampoo
Aloe vera is very good for so many things from the skin and for internal use. Your aloe vera is also ver good for your hair. Make your Aloe vera mix by pouring some in a cup, add some lemon juice and some shampoo, up to a cup will do, mix together and use this to wash hair. Rinse with warm water, dry and style. You can repeat this method up to twice a week.
Lemon Juice Mix
Squeeze out the juice from two lemons, mix with 2 cups of water and massage mixture into hair. Comb through the entire hair and wash after 5 minutes. Repeat twice a week.

I’ve always had easy-to-take-care-of hair (thankfully!), but I have stopped washing it as often and the change is amazing. It just feels healthier all the time. I thought it was fine before, but now I know there is something better.
Any additional thoughts on hair coloring? I have a shocking amount of grey hair, so I make regular trips to the salon to get that covered up.
Hi Sarah, thank you for reading. And I do understand the grey hair bit, it is inevitable I would say. Please embrace it, enjoy it and try exploring colours; do a colour you haven’t tried before and see how you like it.
Will find out more if their is any other ways to slow down greys and I will be more than happy to share this with you.
Much Love beautiful.
Ohhh drats! Just did a natural hair collaboration I sure wish I spoke to you earlier so we could have collabed with you as well! I love using the AVC rinse, I started this year and my hair loves it! 🙂

Great advice! Your hair is stunning. I started using a great French line called Leonor Greyl that is all natural and incredibly moisturizing. I use more than one shampoo too and I find that switching it up causes great results! Sometimes your hair gets “used” to the same old products and new shampoo can act as a clarifier, ridding the hair of build up.
Great tips – thanks again! http://www.styledomination.com
Thank you beautiful. Appreciate the time and comment.
