I got a comment on my You Tube Channel a while back and the comment/request goes thus……”You are very elegant, can you make a video on how to look elegant”? That is flattering to me but challenging I must confess.
I am still cracking my head on how to make a video on how to be elegant. While I am at it, let me share some TIPS on how you can look expensive even when you shop cheap. And of course my take on how to look elegant.
Now go and Subscribe to the Moj in touch You Tube Channel if you haven’t done so already.
Now unto Style Philosophy…….
1 ::: KNOW YOUR PERSONAL STYLE
One of the most important parts of the body is the eyes. It is the eyes that draw attention to what we like. When we like something, it appeals to us. Personal Style is the same. If you like something, in this case some kind of clothing, you will be drawn to it even if it doesn’t appeal to any other person. Your personal style is your preference in clothing.
What appeals to me may not appeal to you and that is where PERSONAL STYLE comes in. No matter how many piles of clothes are presented to you, the clothes that appeal to you all the time indicate your personal style. When you know your personal style, you will always shop for you and you will look expensive when you wear what you like. Learn your personal style here
2 ::: ACCESSORISE YOUR LOOK
Accessories can make or break a look. If done well, you will look expensive even if you are wearing cheap. If done wrong, you may look tacky. If there is any kind of accessories you should gravitate towards, it should be gold or gold plated jewellery. Gold whether real gold or imitation looks very lush and expensive.
Silver jewelry may not be as flashy as gold but they are enough to accessorise your look. You can also “bling out” a look for fun factor. Wondering how to choose the perfect silver jewelries, check here
So, use accessories to dress up your look to make your look expensive.
Other accessories like sunglasses, heels and handbags can make you look expensive.
Let’s have a look at what I mean with accessorising………….
Use jeweled belt to dress up your plain look
Full details of that look here
A pair of Sunglasses can add some “swag”your look some swag…….
Coloured ones are kind of on trend at the moment.
A gorgeous pair of heels and structured bag will dress up your look.

Number 3 :::: MIX HIGH STREET & HIGH END & LESS IS MORE
This is one of the things a lot of people get wrong. A lot of people think they have to wear designer clothes from head to toe to look expensive. NO, you don’t. You can wear designer things/stuff from head to toe but still look cheap. If not careful, you could look tacky.
Wearing designer things with a lot of embellishments could look tacky. For example, you have a belt with big logo, bag with big logo, necklace with big logo, face cap with big logo etc. All of those things can be over the top and tacky.
There is nothing wrong in wearing designer brand from head to toe, I do that too but not with all of those embellishments. Always remember the simple style rule that says less is more.
If you are true to your personal style and creative in your styling, you will look expensive even if you shop cheap. The key word is CREATIVITY!
Let’s have a look at a mix of high street and high end………..
Let me break the look above down……….
Pants are from Joseph | Waist Coat & Blazer from Zara | Sunglasses from Micheal Kors | Shoes from Gucci | Purse from Sophie Hulme.
The above is a typical example of mixing high street with high end.
So your look does not have to be all designer / high end for you to look expensive.
Now, let’s have a look at High end from head to toe without looking tacky!
Here’s is the break down……
Dress by VIctoria Beckham | Shoes by Christian Louboutin | Tote by Sophie Hulme.
All of the above are from the high end fashion. They also represent my style, what I like to wear; modern classics.
It is important to embrace your style, when you do, you look expensive
4 ::: BE YOUR SELF
Aside your personal style, it is very important for you to be yourself. I mentioned earlier that I got a comment/request to make a video on how to be elegant.
See, when you are your self, you will dress confidently, you will feel confident, you will look confident and with all of that, you will look elegant no matter what you wear.
And when I say no matter what you wear, I mean whether cheap or expensive. I remember wearing a Primark / Pennys dress I picked up for €3.00 on the sale rack to a meeting and someone turned around to say; this dress should be worn to church on a Sunday morning. It wasn’t because of the dress or how much I paid for it, it was because of how I wore the dress. I wore some accessories, wore some make up and I looked a million dollar in my €3.00 dress.
Another thing about being yourself is that a lot of people will expect you to dress a certain way because that is what they think is right. It may also be that your personal style differs from theirs. I get this all the time as a fashion blogger but I do me all the time. Unfortunately, I can not change myself for anybody. I encourage you not to. If you are happy with what you wear and how you wear it, you are ready to conquer the world and you will look expensive when you are yourself.
5 ::: LEARN HOW TO SHOP
Honestly, you do not have to have lots of money to look a million dollar. All you need is to know how to shop, know what you own and how to mix the old items in your closet with the new ones. Easy breezy!
See my article on HOW to shop happy. I also have one on HOW to bag the best of sale
6 :::: KNOW YOUR BOUNDARIES / COMFORT LEVEL
When I say boundaries, I mean know what you are comfortable in / with. For someone like me, I love my high heels. If you are not comfortable with wearing high heels, wear flats, there is nothing wrong with that.
If you love high heels and don’t know how to walk in them yet, start by taking baby steps. Start out with kitten heels; they are usually about 2-3 inches in height and that is why they are called kitten heels. Kitten, as in baby; baby cat.
When you are comfortable with walking with those, you can then progress to the next level of heels till you become a PRO.
Wobbling on heels will make you look cheap even if you are wearing expensive clothes. Wearing smart heels make you comfortable. Elegance come with comfort. Also don’t drag, carry your self well, walk smart, walk tall and with your head up high.

7 ::: PLAN, TRY ON & THEN WEAR
One of the tricks that as worked for me and one I also teach my clients is how to plan to look well. Dressing well is just like any other thing. When you plan ahead, you look well. Try this approach……..visualise first and then try it on.
When you try on something you want to wear later first, it will almost look like you are trying out a new outfit in the store. If you do not like it, you can return it and try on something else. This may sound complicated or time consuming but the end result on how you look is always worth it.
Put on your favourite music or TV show while doing this and you won’t feel a thing. For your week’s wardrobe, you can use this same approach on a Sunday night. Then hang all of your what to wear that week in an area of your wardrobe, reach for them each week day and off you go. The more you do this, the more creative you will be in your styling. Not only that, it makes life easy for you everyday especially if you have children. I do have children so I know time flies easily when you have to care for your self and your children.
You can also use this same method to plan for your entire family. Your mornings will be smoother and faster.
In summary, to be stylish and to look expensive even if you shop cheap, you have to……..
create your own style, embrace your self and your style, wear what you love in your own, walk like a boss and confidently.

I think we’ve all seen some celebrities dressed head-to-toe in designer wear who look extremely tacky!
I for one love the heels and structured bag look to make anything look elegant. Of course, and again, I suppose picking the right heel is important, because we’ve all seen some pretty tacky and very cheap-looking heels!
I totally agree with you Sarah .Thank you for reading.

These are all fab tips and you are totally preaching to the choir, I have these gold and black Lion earrings and everytime I wear them someone goes, ‘Are those Versace?’ and I smile and go, ‘No, they are from Claire’s Accessories’. If you have a good eye, you can pick out stuff for a bargain that looks like a designer piece! Love your accessories in these pics! ( :
