Honestly, the last thing on my mind for the book launch was what to wear. I wasn’t so particular about what to wear because although it was important, it wasn’t urgent. What was urgent to me were things like; getting the cake sorted, ensuring bags to take away was delivered and most importantly, ensuring books was available for reveal and launch.
While what to wear on the day wasn’t my focus, I knew I wanted to stand out on the day. But wait, what does it mean to stand out?
Motivation for Monday ::: You Can Stand Out
To write this post effectively, I needed to take a new turn. What do I mean? I have been thinking about that word standing out for a while and for me to be able to inspire you better, I needed to find a picture that tells the story better. That picture above is the one…..
Look at that picture. Look at it again, what can you see?
Me: I see an old dirty wall, blue door and me standing right in the middle of it. Although the wall is so dirty and old, I managed to stand out on the scene. Yes, if I can say so myself, I am a beautiful woman but that is not the point. The point is that no matter where you are in life, what you do, where you live and no matter who you are, you can stand out. But HOW?
Let me use for example, the fashion blogging world. You see a lot of ladies, beautiful ladies trying to outdo themselves. They want to be who they are not, they want to be like other people, dress like other people and wear what other people wear. It is a lot to deal with I tell you but it always inspiring to look up to other people. While it is okay to look up to other people, it is NEVER okay to want to be like other people. WHY?
When you try to be like other people, you can NEVER stand out. You will never be noticed. When people see you, they can tell already that you are like someone else, especially if the person who you are trying to be is famous or popular. Okay, this is it……instead of being in other people’s shadows, it is better to walk your walk and create your own shadow. That way, people can see your shadow clearly. Trust me, originality comes with fulfillment
How can you stand out?
1, Be original:
Originality brings about creativity and self push. What this means is, you strive to do things in your own way. When you do, you create your own path and you find your way eventually.
Someone who stands out to me in this regard is Tu-Face Idibia (a Nigerian artist). Anytime, I hear him sing, he doesn’t sound like anyone else, he sounds like Tu-Face because of his originality which has helped him built his creativity and brand. So no matter what you do, be it writing, singing, sewing, or a Blogger, do it your own way and you will stand out.
2, Self-Development:
One of the things I emphasised on in my book, “Use What You Have” is self development. If you loose every physical or material gifts you have in this world, you will be grand if you have been developing yourself because with what you know, you can buy all those things back.
If you don’t develop yourself, if everything goes, you will feel “naked” because there is nothing left in the physical and nothing left on the inside. Not developing yourself will not make you stand out. On the other hand, self developing yourself will make you stand out.
3, Patience
Every successful people I know has paid a price. From Oprah to Barack Obama to Genevieve Nnaji to Toke Makinwa, they have all paid a price. You may not hear of everything they have gone through in life, but trust me, they have paid their price.
Before you see your name in glitters and on bill boards, you have to be willing to pay the price. You have to do what others don’t want to do. You have to be fearless, you have to pray, work hard, deny yourself and so much sacrifices you have to make. In fact, you have to continue to work in secret and your reward will eventually come out in the open.
All of the people I have mentioned above have paid one price or the other and that is why you see their names today in the news, on papers, on billboards etc.
The question is what price are you willing to pay?
Back to the Picture, take a look at it again. Although the wall was old and dirty, I still managed to stand out…..the picture is a raw footage by the way….it is original, no photoshop and no editing, yet I stood out.
See no matter where you are in life or what you are dealing with, you can stand out only if you allow yourself through originality, creativity, hard work and more………..
I will continue on HOW to stand out in another post but for now, continue to try those 3 above. If you want to learn more about standing out, I encourage you to get my book, Use What You Have, Kindle or Paper back.

What I Wore For My Book Launch
Like I said above, what I would wear for the book launch wasn’t a priority to me until I was certain every other thing is grand.
Although, I wasn’t thinking about it too much, I ordered a few things which could be it. I knew I wanted to be elegant and I wanted to stand out so the things I ordered were all in the league of elegance because it was the night I celebrated being an Author; so it was important that I SLAYED 🙂
It was a cold evening so I had to “cover up”. I wore this maxi skirt with tight high double slit and a bell sleeve blouse. To accentuate my frame, I wore a statement belt and a statement earrings completes my look. Thanks to my Sis-in Law for that statement earrings.
Although the front of the blouse looked all covered up, the back had a heart shape cut out which was nice and enough for the evening…….See a peek-a-boo below……………
This was exactly what I wore on the night except I changed my hair in these photos. I couldn’t do blog photos on the night, we did general photos which I will probably share at some stage. I just have to be careful for the sake of the people who don’t like their pictures to be shared on blogs.
This kind of look is perfect for any elegant occasion from red carpet to a fancy Christmas or New Year Soiree and of course for a book launch which was my case.
I was wearing……..
Issa Skirt, similar HERE & HERE, this one HERE on sale // Etienne Aigner blouse HERE, budget friendly HERE & HERE
I want to thank you so much for stopping by today. I hope you are inspired by the look as well as the motivation for Monday. Remember, you can stand out if you allow yourself.
I will continue on that subject real soon……
In the meantime, you can get my book, “Use What You Have” to learn more about standing out. This will make a perfect holiday gift for you or your loved ones.
