As a Writer and Fashion Aficionado who also happens to inspire, encourage and motivate other people to become who they truly want to be irrespective of their circumstance, sex and age, I also spend a lot of time researching and watching great contents that can help me be better at what I do. So, last week, I saw this video where Editor-in-chief Edward Enninful of British Vogue sat down to interview Oprah Winfrey. In that interview, I learnt a few pointers and I will be sharing some of that with you today on Motivation for Monday.
In that interview, Oprah said and I quote, ” For a long time, I didn’t consider myself a brand”. She then said, she has since come to terms with being called a brand. This Oprah’s statement ties in, into what one of my Lecturers said to me when I was rounding up my post grad. in January of 2018. She said and I quote, “Mj, you are such a talented and classy woman, be sure to choose a Career path you really truly want after this programme”. Since she said those words to me behind those closed doors, I am very mindful of the kinds of places and with whom I want to work. Truly, if you go after what you do not want to do because you just want to make money, you are setting yourself up for LACK OF FULFILMENT. At this stage in my very quiet life, I want to make money that makes me FULFILLED…..
On today’s blog, I want to encourage you on why you are a brand too.
See, every time your name is mentioned, something pops up in the minds of people. For example, if you mention Oprah, the one thing that may pop up in your head maybe, The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) or Billionaire. Something like that. I am not all that BUT if you mention my name – Mojisola Obazuaye, you are likely to think – Blogger or Writer or Author or Stylist or Speaker. Something like that.
So, in your case, when someone says your name, what do you want them to refer to you as? What identity do you want people to define you as? You don’t know? This is worth thinking about really….
You see, if there is anything you want to be identified as, guess what? If you do not begin now to start working on building that brand identity, you would not become that person. For example, when I started this blog, in my profile, I wrote, “I love writing and someday, I would love to write a book”. I wrote those lines even though I wasn’t sure how this could happen BUT I wrote it anyway and with the help of God, I have written not one book but 2 Amazon best selling books and the third one on the way……..
Listen my friends, you may never have thought about how you want to brand yourself as a person. You may not also know, in your career or small business, you have to brand yourself so each time when people think about you, something pops up in their mind about you and what you do. Think of the following brands:
Spanx: Women’s Shaping Underwear
KFC: Chicken
Microsoft: Bill Gates or Billionaire
Tyler Perry: Films
Teju Baby Face: Talk Show or Event Hosts
TD Jakes: Preacher
Like I always say, life is what we make of it. If where you are now or what you are doing now is not the brand identity you want to have, you must do something about it. If you don’t, you may not be that person you truly want to be or build the brand identity you truly want to build. I would tell you this also: I am a Lifestyle Blogger – this means, I share everything that makes my audience’s life better including Fashion, Beauty, Motivation – those are the 3 major areas I have focused on since I started my blogging journey. However, as time went on, I decided I didn’t want to make Make up videos anymore. WHY? This is because I sat down and asked myself, in the next five years, do I want to be known for Make up artistry which is a beautiful and absolutely phenomenal form of art and rewarding too and the answer was NO. Then I asked again, do I want to be known as a Motivational Speaker or Writer or Fashion Consultant with my Masters in Fashion Buying, I was quick to say YES to myself with a smile.
Not that I won’t ever make Make up videos anymore. I actually consider myself very good in styling my Hair, Make up and all, it is part of the bundle that comes with being a Blogger. I have learnt it and I would share it if I want to BUT my focus would never be to be known as a “Make Up Guru” or Make up Artist or anything in that line. Since I enjoy writing, I now create Make up contents in form of writing and video giving the best advise with the knowledge I gained from being an Independent Beauty Consultant with Mary Kay many years ago. Amazingly one of my most viewed videos on YouTube is my video on “How to Choose the Best Foundation For Your Skin Tone” with over 60K views. This particular video also has the best feedback from different people from different parts of the world. This tells me that when we are obedient to the still small voice in our hearts – the voice of God, things always work out. Although I am not making Make up videos as an ART, I am sharing my knowledge of it for proper usage and application. The beauty of choosing to share make advise instead of make up application is that most Make up artists only share the arts of Make up, which is beautiful BUT not the knowledge of it. Right there, I have carved a niche for myself and it is working for me.
Also, you would notice that Make up artists, especially on YouTube and Instagram are very popular. While it is good to be popular, it is BEST to be FULFILLED – And this is my desire – to be fulfilled doing the things I am passionate about – style, write, speak, inspire – encourage – motivate………to help the people have being called to serve.
So, if there is anything you want to be, start working on that now and think of yourself as a brand. Finally, Oprah Winfrey in that interview said, “she gets frustrated when young people think they have to be successful now”. I will add older people too. Anytime you start anything, you may not be successful now but eventually, you would be successful. The ideal is for you to make the right moves towards being SUCCESSFUL. Do the things that leads you to WHERE YOU WANT TO BE, nothing else………….Think about it.
Right now, I am doing everything that would eventually lead me to where I truly want to be in the future…..TRUST YOUR JOURNEY, things always work out………
So, you are a brand too. What is it you want to be known for? You must make up your mind to pay the price and do whatever it is you have to do (legally) to be that person.
