I have now come to realise that some things you can learn, some things you can build on and growth is possible. And also, it is possible to become who we want to be without becoming who we are not……
Disclaimer: First, this is a TMI post (too much information) but as a Writer and Encourager, I still have to share the life lessons I learnt with you to help you be who you want to be. Today, I will be sharing with you the 3 lessons I learnt from getting my third Mirena. It is NOT for women only.
Almost the whole of March, I was in Nigeria and I knew that my Mirena was due for change. The first thing I did once I returned to Dublin was to book an appointment to have the old one taken out and get another one “installed”. I didn’t get an appointment till the 10th of April because my Doctor who did the first and second round was fully booked. Since she had done it for me twice with no hassle, I decided to wait till she was available. Now I have the Mirena done for the third time.
Let me take you back a little, Sammy, our second and last child is eleven and I have had mirena on since he was born. So, this is my third round of mirena if you like. Efe, my husband and I have always talked about how many children we wanted to have even before we got married and it has always been two. We have very healthy children (boys) and we are grateful for them……
As I laid on that bed at my Doctor’s office getting this procedure done, the Doctor and I got talking and here are a few life lessons that I learnt:
1. Growth is Possible & Time Waits for No One
For women below 45 years of age, you can use the Mirena for up to 5 years and after 5 years, you must change it. As we went through the procedure, my Doctor mentioned to me that the very first Mirena she did for me was done when she first started out her practice. This tells me that, she is being doing the procedure for up to 10+ years. She was calm, very professional and we chatted through it all.
Life Lesson Number One I Learnt By Speaking With My Doctor
She’s being doing the same things for 10+ years. She has built on what she was trained to do. She has grown doing it and very experienced at it. Her approach was brilliant, even though the procedure comes with a little discomfort, her professionalism and calm made me feel at ease and calm too.
Listen, every time you start something (any thing at all), you won’t be the best on that day. You will or must learn in the process, grow in the process and become calmer in your approach because you would have mastered your craft.
In anything you do, take your time to learn, practice and in the process, you will grow. And the more you do anything, the better you will be at it. Are you starting out a new thing, be it business or acquiring a new skill, you will or may not know everything in a day, in the process of learning and practicing, you will grow.
You will also notice that I mentioned that our second son is 11. It is almost like yesterday that I gave birth to him and now he is 11+. Wow! This goes to show that time waits for no one. So, don’t waste your time. Use your time wisely to acquire skills that will help you grow in whatever you do.

2. Your Purpose is Yours, Embrace It
As we continued the process, we continued talking / chatting like old friends. We chatted about kids and how tall they’ve grown, husbands and how clueless they are about the cramps that comes with getting the Mirena and then we moved to what we do. She said, “she now works 3 days a week to cater to her children and family”. I went ahead to say, I took a little career break as well after I was made redundant, I used that time to discover who I am and want to be and at the time I started a blog……. We kept talking and I talked about blogging and how it has helped me, the books I have written and why I wrote them and on and on.
I saw the look on her face and then she began to wonder how I went from having first and second degree in sciences to becoming a Buyer and Writer. She then said something that struck me which was: “sincerely, the best thing anyone can do for themselves in life is to do what they are truly passionate about”. My jaw dropped!. WHY?
See, my Doctor has a different background, race, religion and culture from me. She is not English and neither is she Irish, yet she was able to make me understand how living in your own purpose is the best gift you can give to yourself…….this showed me “that though we are different, we are ONE”!
Life Lesson Number Two I Learnt By Speaking With My Doctor
It is important to do what you are truly passionate about and at your own pace too. Do it and be free doing it. My Doctor told me that “she only works 3 days a week”. She is living in her purpose and at her own pace too. See, a lot of us tend to want to be like others, we copy others, we want what others have and unfortunately in the process, we forget what we are truly passionate about, our purpose and then we become confused……
I was almost “stoned to death” when I wrote the blog, “Why I Would Not Be a Nurse“. I was glad when my Doctor said, “she can’t even write to save her life”. We all have being called to different things. Our job in life is to find that thing and fulfil our purpose in life by doing that thing. Very important!
Listen, do what you are truly passionate about and at your own pace too. This is how you can become who you want to be and fulfil God’s calling and purpose for your life. Your own purpose could be to be a Doctor, yours could be a Teacher or even a Chef and yours could be anything, please embrace it and do what you were called to do.

3. It is Family First
Some of you may know the popular saying that you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family. This is true, very true actually. Firstly, if you are someone who don’t care for your family, you are OYO (on your own). Now is the time to reach out to your family before it is too late. God forbid that you have a reason to say, “I Wish”. God forbid.
Life Lesson Number Three I Learnt By Speaking With My Doctor
She choose to work only three days so she can care for her family. #family
She said she wonders how her mother copes without seeing any of here children for a long time. #family
She said she is hoping that her children won’t grow as fast as they are growing now. #family
All the above points to only one thing: FAMILY!
See, one thing I learnt from my Doctor on that procedure and one my husband told me a while ago is that as we get older, we spend less time out and more time at home. I have also come to realise that friends come and friends go. The only thing you can call “constant” is your family. If you are not at peace with your family, now is the time to make peace, reconcile and continue to show and share love with them. Your family is important and they should always be a priority to you. It is family first!
