Change they say is a constant thing and in life, we have to be open to change. In her book, Mindset, Dr Carols Dweck, a Professor of Psychology, describes those who are NOT open to change as ones with a fixed mindset. These set of people hate to try new things, they hate change or challenges and if possible they would not change anything even if the thing does not serve it’s purpose or work anymore…….
Today, on Motivation for Monday, I want to encourage you on something I call, Go Out, Magic Happens Outside!
Anyone who knows me in real life would know that I am a “home buddy”. I love staying at home and coincidentally, my husband loves staying at home too. We really do not go out a lot, so, we spend all our time together. So, my escape now is writing. I also love doing chores, well some chores…..
Last Thursday, one of my amazing girls launched an album in Dublin and so I went not because I have to go but because it was important to me that I go out there and show her some support. I am an advocate of supporting creatives no matter how small their work may seem. What is the point in putting up a photo of a loved one when they are no more. We should all learn to make time and support people and their creativity no matter how small their work may seem to us….this is just by the way but true.
Before that event, I started looking for a new Photographer. In my head, I was just like, how on earth would I find a photographer I could bound with while working together? So, I dressed up Thursday night, hopped in my car and drove all the way to town. I packed my car in the multi-story parking in Stephen’s Green and started walking down to the venue. As I walked about 3 minutes, I saw this guy doing photos on the street. I walked up to him and said, are you a Photographer? He said, yes I am. I said listen, I am actually looking for a photographer and he smiled and said, how can I help? Immediately, I told him what I do, we exchanged details and I left thinking, well, I may not see him again. I shook his hand and left. After walking a little bit farther from him, I saw him running after me and he said, well, I just wanted to take you a quick shot of you. He took a quick shot of me and we have been chatting since then…..
Personally, I believe my steps was ordered to this particular car park and that route because there were so many places I could have parked in town..I am grateful that I trusted my instinct. Instinct whispers, it doesn’t shout. Trust yours!
Real Life Lesson One:
I was looking for a Photographer, even when I wasn’t looking, I found one, only because I left home. Go out, Magic happens outside.
Real Life Lesson Two:
I was open to change because I know change is a constant thing. Be Open to change. Have a “Growth” mindset; one that people who are receptive of change have.
Real Life Lesson Three:
I trusted my Instinct. That still small voice. So, Trust your instinct.
See, in life, the plans we make or one we have on ground may not go as planned BUT we must be open to change and embrace or explore other options. When we do this, we let ourselves see other opportunities that lie ahead of us. As hard as change may be, we must be open to change.
Olajumoke:
If you are Nigerian, you may or may not be familiar with the story of Olajumoke. She was a bread seller, not just a bread seller, she used to hawk bread on the streets of Lagos.
On one fateful day, she left home as always, went to the bakery to collect bread to be sold on the day and was hawking. Just like my guts lead me to go through that route that day, she was lead to a street where a mega-super star was being shot by one of Nigerian’s finest photographer,TY Bello.
Unknown to her, she didn’t know what was going in. She kept on doing her own business and the photos were being done. As she passed by, her photos were taken by the photographer which she shared on social media. Instagram to be precise.
As soon as she shared the photos, the whole of Instagram started buzzing about how cool she was in the photo for a bread seller. A lot of people actually thought she was part of the shoot but she was not.
Due to popular demand, they went hunting for this bread seller and found her. “They” helped change her life forever. Now, she is one of the biggest faces in Nigeria with a modelling contract, brand Ambassadorship, a home that was given to her by a construction agent and many more things…..
Why did Olajumoke Experience this Life Changing Shift?
It was simply because she left home. She went outside…..
In life, things may not be rosy for you. You may not have for example a job or you may just be looking for a photographer like myself. Sincerely, if you can go out, magic may just happen for you.
It is so easy to stay at home and feel sorry for yourself(self-pity), feel angry or depressed, while all of the mentioned are part of life and people experience them, they may be prevented only if we can just leave home and go outside….
I heard of an unemployed graduate in London who choose to go and stay by the train station with a big sign with details of his credentials. As people passed him by, a lot of working professionals gave him their contacts and through this simple process of going out, he found a job. He had a choice to stay at home BUT he choose to go outside where MAGIC happened for him.
Please don’t stay indoors. Don’t shut yourself in. Don’t think change won’t come. Don’t give up on hope. Don’t stop praying. Don’t ever doubt that change would come. Please get up, dress up and go outside. Dress up and go to that audition. Dress up and go to that interview. Dress up and go and attend that show. Get up and show up. Go Out, Magic Happens Outside.
