Don’t you just think boring, old fashioned or not trendy when you hear the word classic? Meanwhile the classic woman’s wardrobe is far from boring. Rather it is tailored, minimal and stylish.
In today’s post, I will share with you the style pieces you would or could or should find in a classic woman’s wardrobe and how to style them. If in your personal style all you like to wear is any of the pieces featured in this post, then you may be classic in style.
In case you are wondering if my style is classic, yes I am a modern classic because I like tailored pieces. I also love a little touch of romance in my looks.
Not sure what your personal style is, check this article on Personal Style and find out what your style is.
Now unto style pieces you would or could or should find in a classic woman’s wardrobe, if you like, call them the “wardrobe essentials” of the classic woman………
Fitted Skirt & Fitted Blazer
Every classic woman would have at least one fitted skirt and one fitted blazer in their closet. If I am been honest, I think every woman should have at least one of each in their closet. They are easy to mix and match with other pieces in your wardrobe. A skirt suit can take you from day to night with the right accessories. And what better way can anyone show up at a professional job interview than in a skirt suit.
Some classic women prefer “trouser suit”. I happen to like both and in most cases I mix and match them to create a set. I rarely buy the pieces together. Not only does it save you so much money, it gives you the chance to be creative in selecting what works with what. See “trouser suit” below in both black and white……
Like I said above, I like to mix and match pieces so both the black pants-suit and the white sets are “mix and match”……
If you are not sure HOW TO MIX & MATCH separates, in this monochrome look where I styled a pants-suit, I shared TIPS to follow on mixing and matching.
Classic Blue Denim & Classic White Shirt
Every classic woman has at least a pair of denim in their closet and of course so many fitted white shirt. For some one like me, I can’t stop buying white shirts not only because I am classic but because white shirts go with everything. You can wear them with denim like the look above or with a print Ankara I wore here etc.
The possibilities of the classic denim and white shirt are endless. They both are not only perfect for the classic woman’s wardrobe but are perfect in everybody’s wardrobe.
The Little Black Dress
The wardrobe of the classic woman is incomplete without the LBD. They are perfect for all occasions from business meetings to date nights and to job interviews if they are the perfect length. If you have to go for a funeral, the LBD will also be perfect for that purpose.
One can never be OVER dressed or UNDER dressed with the little black dress….Karl Lagerfeld.
You can dress them up and you can dressed them down. You can take them from AM(desk) to PM(dinner). They are versatile……
You can style them with heels or flats, you can wear them with blazer and of course you can do as you please with your hair and make up when it comes to the LBD.
Every classic woman has at least one in their closet and / or have worn one before. Think of a Classic women like Audrey Hepburn or a modern classic woman like Scandal’s Olivia Pope.
For a season like Spring & Summer, the typical classic woman would have at least one coloured dress in her closet (go for a colour your like; white, cream, blush etc). One that is fitted and not tight. An example is the one below……
To see more of the look in yellow check here. I also shared the difference between fitted and tight in that post.
Accessories ::: Shoes, Bags & Jewelries
Every classic would or should have at least one pair of black heels ( choose a cut out pair to make it modern), a nude or beige heels and a pair of flats. Let’s start with those 3.
Other kinds of shoes you could/would find in the wardrobe of the classic woman can include sling backs, open toe sandals as seen here etc.
Accessories could include Pearls, Stud Earrings & Brooches……
Other Accessories ::: Structured Bag or clutch
In summary, the Classic wardrobe accessories could be what you see in the image below………
Before you question why EVERYTHING is NUDE and BLACK, remember that the point of these add-ons is that they are supposed to go well with everything. You can add color later on! All this accessories are perfect for work/day or AM/PM.
As for nude shoes, NUDE simply means a colour that matches your own NATURAL skin tone. The synonyms related to nude as the dictionary defines it are uncovered, undressed, undraped and exposed. Exposed and uncovered are the two I love the most; Means bare and open. You can read the full article I wrote on NUDE heels HERE
Some Other Types of Clothes the Classic Woman wear (non essentials)
Mini dresses / Shirt Dresses & Midi Skirts
The above are the expected wardrobe essentials or basics of the classic woman. They are also style pieces I would recommend for any classic woman trying to build their wardrobe from the scratch. Like I always say, start out with pieces you can mix and match, that way you get more wear out of your wardrobe. You can then begin to buy the non essentials; some of which I shared after the essentials e.g tweeds, midi skirts etc.
As always, I want to thank you so much for stopping by today. Wishing you a lovely day today.
Much Love, Mojisola.
