ASK MJ ::: “Skin Care” Question
Can lack of adequate water cause my face to be dry? Or applying foundation directly to my face without a primer?
I did it once and I noticed my face became dry after taking it off.
MJ SAYS
Let me start by saying, NEVER leave your skin unhydrated. It will make your skin age untimely (wrinkles, fine lines and unevenness of the skin).
How Do You Hydrate Your Skin?
Drink water + wear moisturiser = simple logic
Then Repeat everyday.
Yes, your skin could be dry if it doesn’t have adequate / enough / sufficient moisture. It’s just like not drinking water when you are thirsty. When you are thirsty, you crave water and once you take water, you feel hydrated, revived, rejuvenated and your thirst is quenched.
Your skin is not too different from how you feel when you feel like drinking water. When your skin needs moisture, it sometimes itch, feels dry or the appearance doesn’t just look right. When you feel your skin is dry, use moisturiser on it. The moisture your skin needs is any kind of moisturiser formulated for your skin type. Drink enough water + moisturise the skin, both work together .
Will My Skin Dry Out If I wear my Make Up Without a Primer?
Primers are not formulated for hydrating the skin. They are intended for making the skin matte or tame oil on the face. Matte means to be oil free or less shine, in this case on the face. Primers does the opposite of what moisturisers do. Moisturisers hydrates while primers mattify.
To learn more about primers and how to make your face matte, please check this post HERE.
Not wearing a primer before your make up (foundation / powder) will not make your skin dry but not wearing a moisturiser before your make up could make your skin dry.
If you don’t have a primer, ensure to always moisturise your skin before any kinds of make up. It hydrates, protects the skin and locks in moisture + your foundation has something to stick to.
What Your Skin Care Routine Should be Really
Day time or morning : Wash, Clarify or tone, Moisturise and then Primer, Foundation and all other make up follows.
Night time : Remove make up (never, ever go to bed with your make up on), wash, clarify or tone to remove make up residue, moisturise and then you can go to bed.
It is a bonus to always drink a large glass of water before heading to bed. This is not only good for the skin but prevents heart attack. This ritual I have done for more than 10 years of my life. I drink water first thing in the morning and last thing in the night. You will always find water by my bed side.
Drinking water first thing in the morning before any meal also helps aid digestion and reduces bloatedness and constipation. Those ones are by the way but hey, why not?
Exfoliating Your Skin, Is it necessary?
Exfoliating of the skin should be done when necessary. Exfoliating the skin simply means to deep cleanse the skin (face on this occassion) to remove impurities and dead cells from the skin. Exfoliating the skin reveals a clean, smooth and youthful skin
Exfoliating should never be overdone. It is ideal to do it once a week or a maximum of 2 times a week. I always say to pay attention to your skin and see what works. If you think your skin looks dull, clogged up, then it is time to exfoliate the skin.
Exfoliating the skin too much can cause dryness eventually or could make your skin too oily. When you wash or exfoliate your skin, you remove the natural oils from your face. To restore it, wear moisturiser. If you don’t wear moistursers, your skin will produce its own oil which in turn can make your skin too oily.
Always pay attention to what works on your skin!

Well done.
Thank you for asking. It was a great question and it is my pleasure to share more. Do take care Oluseyi. Cheers.
Great post. The only step I’m missing now is the clarifying and toning part. The water… I’m trying to drink more than one bottle a day. When I am really good yo myself, I drink 2 bottles. I need to fo better with this.
What is the purpose of toning anyway. I don’t like too much chemical stuff on my skin so I just wash and moisturize and keep it moving. But I have heard severally that toning shouldn’t be skipped and I never really read up on it. Why is toning necessary?
Thanks Moji!
Hi Sade,
Thank you for reading.
Every time we wash our faces, we strip off our faces off the natural oils on our faces. To restore moisture to the face, moisturiser is good for this purpose.
Toner or clarifying lotion is meant to:
1, remove excess make up or make up residue from the face
2, balance the texture of the skin and hydrate the skin
3, Helps tone the skin: what this means is it reveals a clean, fresh and softer skin.
It is important NOT to use any toner with alcohol to get this effect. Facial toner with alcohol will dry out the skin and will cause ageing of the skin untimely.
Always choose toners that are water based.
I hope that helps. I will do a full post on this very soon to explain more.
Cheers.
